1990 Mako 231 Center Console
For sale is a completely re-done 1990
Mako 231. I bought this boat with a
cut-down transom. I took it to a boat
builder who installed a new transom. I
asked him to over build it so that it
could handle a 300 HP engine. He made the
transom so thick that I had to buy longer
bolts from Stainless Marine! The
engine was diagnosed with a weak
cylinder. I considered rebuilding it, but
figured I'd be better off replacing the
existing engine. Most people want a boat
with a working engine. I understand that.
However, one can purchase an engine from
thousands of different sources, while
finding a reputable boat builder to cut
out the floor, build a new transom and
make it look decent is hard to come by.
It's a solid platform upon which to hang
an engine that, as mentioned can be
acquired easily. And, if you provide the
engine, you KNOW what you have. If you
purchase a boat with a used engine on it,
do you really know what you
have?
The boat still has the original
scuppers (two on each side) and it does
sit above the waterline. I added a
watertight inspection hatch ($500+)
instead of the normal Mako inspection
hatch. The transom and swim platform were
completed for around $6,000 (2006 when
the labor rate was $40/hour). It would
probably cost much more to do that today.
The boat trailer is included. It is in
fairly good condition, but the tires
while looking ok are old and should be
replaced before any long trips. I do have
a brand new spare tire (recently
purchased) for the trailer. The lights
and brakes worked well the last time I
used it.
This is a very nice package for
someone with a 225 - 300 hp engine
looking for a home.
I have all (most) combing and seat
cushions. I also have a spray bonnet to
keep your guests comfortable and dry in
the event of a sudden storm or if they
don't like the sun. T-top in good
condition also. The leaning post has a
removable backrest which is nice for long
trips. Other little niceties are pull up
cleats in the rear to reduce line snag
when fishing.
I'd be happy to discuss any questions
that you may have.
