1985 Wauquiez Hood 38 MK II
Second Wind
1985 38 foot Hood Wauquiez
MKII
Second Wind is a beautiful example of
the Ted Hood designed 38 ft MKII
centerboard cruising yacht. She was
crafted in France by the reknown yacht
builder Wauquiez, and is a U.S.
documented vessel
In the cockpit and below deck
she has beautiful varnished teak
woodwork, The floorboards are accented
with holly and have been lovingly
restored to their original elegance. Her
deck is fiberglass so there are no
worries there.
She only draws 4'6" with the board up,
which is ideal for exploring hidden
harbors or traversing the intercoastal
waterway. With the board down she is a
stable offshore cruiser.
The Master Vee berth has a hanging
locker, shelves and generous storage
under the berth. It has a private
entrance to the head and a massive hatch
to catch the evening breezes. For
windless nights there are custom screens
and fans.
In addition to the Master, there is a
private aft cabin with it's own sink,
hanging locker, shelves and a storage
cabinet. The door on this cabin has been
modified to swing inward.
With the leaves on the salon table
raised, you can serve 6 to 8 guests for
dinner. The starboard settee transforms
into a double bed, and the port settee is
over 6 ft long. There is abundant storage
in the main cabin including hanging
lockers, lockers behind and under the
seats, and convenient shelving. The large
hatch and companionway have custom
screens for good ventilation.
The head has a jabsco manual toilet
(2016), with a holding tank and deck
pump-out fitting. It has plenty of
shelves in the cabinets for personal gear
and separate doors to the Master Berth
and Salon for privacy. The head has a
full enclosure shower curtain if you
choose to shower inside and a pull-out
shower head long enough to let you shower
on deck if you choose.
The Galley is to port with easy access
to the cockpit or the cabin table.
Refrigeration is motor driven, there is a
gimbled, two burner propane stove with
oven, a double sink and abundant storage
with drawers for utensils, and lockers
and shelves for pans, dishware, glasses
and of course food. A locker under the
sink holds cleaning supplies.
Froward of the galley is a sit-down
chart table, which can also serve as a
prep area for the cook. It includes a
lift top for chart and gear storage,
shelves for navigation, communication and
safety gear.
On deck there is a new Lewmar H2
anchor windlass with 300 ft of line and
100 ft of chain attached to a 3-year-old
44 lb Rocna anchor. The windlass can be
controlled using a pendant controller on
the bow or from a switch in the cockpit.
Large lockers at the bow provide extra
protection in case of a collision; the
forward locker is devoted to the anchor
rode, the next one holds a spare Danforth
with 200ft (?)of rode, 4 fenders,
lines and boathooks. It also contains a
washdown hose to clean mud and sand from
the anchor and decks. The washdown pump
normally uses salt water, but a two-way
valve switches the suction to the fresh
water tanks, making it convenient for
cleaning the boat or for a refreshing
shower after swimming.
A new cockpit enclosure provides
protection on rainy days and extends the
sailing season into the fall. The custom
dodger and bimini have clear vinyl
curtains that extend completely around
the cockpit so it is comfortable in any
weather. and cockpit table unfolds to
seat 5 for dinner. Port and starboard
lazarettes provide massive amounts of
storage under the cockpit seats. A
folding swim ladder on the stern provides
easy access from the water or a dingy and
is a safety feature as it can be reached
from the water should someone fall
overboard.
For the helmsman, there is a folding
wheel with Autohelm ST4000 autopilot
whenever the driver feels lazy. A
pedestal mounted compass and a Raymarine
multifunctional display with chart
graphics and radar. Wind, speed and depth
gauges are conveniently located above the
companionway entrance.
